Full steam ahead for Independent Living Skills

By Sentinel-Times

THANKS to support from the local community, Inverloch now has a weekly NDIS-funded Independent Living Skills program supporting young adults with disabilities.

The Inverloch RSL jumped at the opportunity to provide its kitchen for the weekly program, which started in early February.

Sub-Branch President Ross Gabb said, “The Inverloch RSL prides itself on helping veterans and community groups and organisations that operate with the same intentions as ours.”

“Teaching teenagers how to manage basic life skills is something we all should be doing; this will assist them to have a future life balance.

“We are glad we can be of assistance.”

The Inverloch program is the culmination of a long-held dream for chef, hospitality trainer and cooking school owner Marlene Hoff.

Marlene’s business 100 Mile Foodie encourages the development of independent living skills by teaching clients about nutritious food choices, using a hands-on approach.

“I’m delighted to see this program up and running in Inverloch, and at such a great central location,” Marlene said.

“There are many people in both the Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire who live with a disability. They should be given as many opportunities as possible to live independently within their community.”

The Inverloch 100 Mile Foodie program features full-day dietitian and chef created classes, held on Wednesday each week.

Participants learn to prepare and cook healthy recipes in a fun, social environment.

If their goal is supported paid employment, the food hygiene, food safety, knife skills and food preparation skills taught in this program will build an important foundation for future work prospects.

Places are still available. If this sounds like something that would benefit a young person in your life, contact Marlene on 0432 274 907 for details.
